FAQ
-
Who manufactures the windows and doors?
We do. Unlike many suppliers who simply buy in pre-made frames, Midhurst Windows and Doors is a true in-house manufacturer. Every timber window and door we install are fabricated by our own team of skilled joiners right here in our Midhurst-based workshop in West Sussex. We also have further capacity, which includes painting and glazing facilities, in Guildford, Surrey.
We are incredibly proud to be a Made in Britain supplier. By manufacturing our own products, we maintain total control over the quality of the timber, the precision of the joinery, and the excellence of the finish. This local approach means your windows aren't just coming off a factory line; they are bespoke pieces of British craftsmanship tailored specifically to your home.
-
What timber do you use?
At Midhurst Windows and Doors, we don't just use wood; we use the world’s leading high-technology timber: Accoya.
While we have the craftsmanship to work with various traditional hardwoods, we have built our reputation on being a specialist Accoya supplier. We believe it is the only material that truly meets the demands of the modern homeowner while preserving the timeless aesthetic of traditional joinery.
-
Do you make and install timber sliding sash windows?
Yes. Perfect for Victorian, Edwardian, and Georgian architecture, our sash windows blend traditional aesthetics with modern performance.
Traditional Detail: We can replicate historic features like glazing bar patterns, horn details, and arched frames.
Modern Function: Available with traditional weights and cords or modern spiral balances.
Efficiency: Fully draught-proofed and fitted with high-performance double glazing as standard.
-
Do you make and install timber casement windows?
Yes. These are handmade cottage-style windows designed to be flush-fitting and sympathetic to your home’s original look.
Bespoke Shapes: We can create custom sizes and shapes, including bay windows and arched tops.
Durability: Most of our casements are made from Accoya timber, which comes with a 50-year anti-rot guarantee and exceptional thermal stability.
-
Do you do uPVC windows?
The short answer is no. At Midhurst Windows and Doors, we have made a conscious, specialist choice to work exclusively with bespoke timber, with a particular devotion to Accoya wood.
While uPVC is a common choice for many, we believe your home deserves a material that offers more than just utility. We specialise in handcrafted, energy-efficient timber solutions that honour the character of period properties and enhance modern homes alike.
-
Do you do single glazing on your windows?
Yes. Traditional single glazing consists of a single pane of glass, typically 4mm thick. While modern building regulations generally require higher levels of insulation for new installations, we offer single glazing primarily for heritage restoration projects and the repair of original timber sash or casement windows. This option is ideal for maintaining the authentic, slender appearance of historic windows where preservation of the original fabric is a priority.
-
Do you do doube glazing on your windows?
Yes, there are two types.
Standard Double Glazing
Our standard double-glazed units are the most popular choice for modern comfort. These consist of two panes of glass separated by a 16mm argon-filled cavity. We use high-performance "Softcoat" Low-E glass, which features a microscopic coating to reflect heat back into your home. This option offers excellent thermal insulation, significantly reduces external noise, and helps eliminate condensation, making your home warmer and more energy efficient.
Heritage Double Glazing
Heritage (or Slimline) double glazing is specifically designed for period properties and listed buildings. These units are much thinner than standard double glazing with a narrow 4mm–6mm cavity. This allows them to be fitted into traditional timber frames without the bulky appearance of some modern units. Heritage glazing provides the thermal benefits of double glazing while remaining sympathetic to the historic character of your property, making it a favourite for local planning applications.

Can I choose a custom or dual colour?
Absolutely. We believe your windows should be as unique as your home. While many of our clients opt for our standard high-quality white gloss or satin finishes, we offer a virtually limitless palette for your new timber frames.
It is also possible to opt for a two-tone or dual colour finish which allows you to pick different colours for the inside and outside of your new windows/doors.
We don't just "paint" our windows; we protect them.
Factory Finished: All windows are spray-applied in our controlled factory environment before installation.
Microporous Paint: We use specialised timber coatings that are "breathable." This allows the wood to move naturally while providing a durable, weather-resistant barrier.
Pro Tip: Because we use high-performance timbers like Accoya, our paint finishes often last significantly longer than they would on standard softwoods, meaning much less maintenance for you over the years.

-
Do the windows and doors satisfy building regulations?
All the sash windows, casement windows and doors that we supply are fully compliant with current Building Regulations. New sash windows, casement windows or doors that fit into existing frames are not required to comply with regulations as such work does not affect the structure of a building. Listed buildings and conservation area properties may be exempt from regulations – your local planning authority will be able to advise you if you are unsure.
-
Are you registered with any professional bodies?
Yes. We believe that professional accreditation is vital for your peace of mind. Our registrations ensure that your installation meets the highest industry standards for safety, quality, and consumer protection.
We are proud members of the following organizations:
- FENSA: As a FENSA-registered company, our installations are regularly assessed to ensure they comply with building regulations. This also means we can self-certify our work, and you will receive a FENSA certificate upon completion—a crucial document when selling your home.
- GGF (Glass and Glazing Federation): Our membership with the GGF demonstrates our commitment to the highest technical standards and ethical business practices within the glazing industry.
- IWA (Independent Warranty Association): We provide IWA deposit protection and insurance-backed guarantees, ensuring your investment is fully protected from start to finish.
- Made in Britain: We are proud to display the Made in Britain mark. All our timber windows and doors are handcrafted by our skilled joiners right here in our Midhurst workshop, supporting local craftsmanship and British manufacturing.
